Galesburg, IL Facts

Located about 50 miles east of the Mississippi River along Interstate 74, the city of Galesburg, Illinois is the epitome of a small college town. Not only is 20% of the city’s population comprised of college students from the two institutions of higher learning that call Galesburg home, Knox College and Carl Sandberg College, but the sole reason Galesburg was even founded was to establish a city that would specifically serve as a home for a college. The city is also the county seat of Knox County, Illinois and has a population just over 32,000.

Galesburg originated from Rev. George Washington Gale’s dream of establishing a college within a town specifically designed to be home for the college. After raising $40,000 to search for a suitable site for the school in 1835, Reverend Gale, along with three other men, purchased land in Knox County, Illinois. Soon after in 1836, the first wave of settlers began arriving to the Reverend’s new town. In 1837, Knox College received its charter and the town began construction on the campus and the rest is history. Knox College also happens to be a National Historic Landmark because it is the only remaining site where one of the Lincoln-Douglas debates took place. In 1966, a two year community college, Carl Sandburg College was established adjacent to Lake Storey Park in north Galesburg.
