Head south on Interstate 57 from Chicago for about 60 miles and you will come across the city of Kankakee, Illinois. In 1834, the federal government signed the Treaty of Camp Tippencanoe with the Potawatami Tribe where the Potawatami agreed to leave their native land and resettle in the western part of the United States. When word of the Treaty began to spread, it wasn’t long until settlers began to pour into the Potawatami’s old territory. The most prominent of these settlers were French Canadians as well as pioneers from New York and Vermont. The town that we now know as Kankakee was established in the area in 1853. By 1865, Kankakee was an incorporated city and the county seat of Kankakee County, Illinois.

Kankakee is located in an area with green lush forests and scenic natural features. The most conspicuous natural feature in the city is the Kankakee River, which bisects the city into two sections. The river creates natural sections along its banks which are used for recreation and relaxation throughout the year. The river also offers residents opportunities for boating (above the dam), canoeing (below the dam), and fishing in its many ponds and small lakes. In addition to the Kankakee River, the city is also equipped with 28 parks that span a combined total of 600 acres in what is known as the Kankakee Valley Park District. The Park District is complete with 15 football fields, 24 playgrounds, 24 tennis courts and 15 basketball courts.
