Streator, IL Facts

Straddling both LaSalle and Livingston counties, the town of Streator, Illinois is situated along the Vermillion River about 80 miles southwest of Chicago. The area was first visited by Europeans in the late 1600s when Frenchmen Jacques Marquette and Louis Joliet explored the region and made the area a part of France’s New World region called La Louisiane. Streator was created and named after Mr. Worthy S. Streator, an Ohio coal financier who invested in the first business venture in the city, a local mining operation.

Streator boomed as the demand for coal from nearby Chicago rose and as more and more European immigrants came into town to work in the coal mines. In fact, many of the city’s current residents can trace their roots back to the early days of Streator. Clay and shale also fueled the city’s growth, as well as a glass-bottle industry that continues today and employs a number of the city’s 13,500 residents.

Streator’s lush natural scenery makes it a destination for outdoor recreation. The 37-acre Spring Lake Nature Park features a waterfall and gorgeous trails with venues for bird-watching, horseback riding and fishing. Canoe the Vermilion is a service that offers instruction, access and equipment for sailing the river at a reasonable rate. Like so many Illinois small towns, Streator also has its share of historical sites. The Weber House and Garden and the Riverview Cemetery, in particular, welcome visitors for a peek into the city’s past.
