Alice, Texas can literally trace its existence to a simple twist of fate. As the story goes, back in the late 1800’s, a railroad company wanted to put a rail line through what was then the town of Collins, TX. When the residents of Collins decided against the idea, the railroad company was forced to change its plans and relocated the railroad a few miles outside of Collins at a railway junction known as Bandana. Within a few years, Bandana went through a couple of name changes and the town that grew around Bandana was eventually renamed into what is now Alice, TX.
Not only is Alice the county seat for Jim Wells County, it is also known for being the cultural center of Tejano Music. Early in its history, Alice’s economy was dependent on the cattle industry mainly due to the railroads and its central location between San Antonio, Corpus Christi, and many of the larger towns along the Rio Grande River. That changed around the middle of the last century when oil was discovered nearby. To this day, Alice is considered an oil town with several oil drilling companies having a presence in Alice, TX.
