Boerne, Texas is located about 35 miles northwest of San Antonio, TX in the heart of the Texas Hill County in Kendall County, Texas. In the middle of the 19th century, waves of immigrants began to settle the area that would eventually become Boerne, Texas. The vast majority of these early settlers were of German heritage. Not only were they German, a large contingent of them were also self proclaimed intellectuals who wanted to create a utopian society based on human rights and free thinking.
Originally called Tusculum, the city was renamed Boerne by its residents in honor of a German author, Ludwig Boerne. Even today, this city of 10,500 still celebrates its cultural heritage with several city sponsored German themed festivals that are held throughout the year. It is also the home of the second oldest limestone courthouse in all of Texas and was one of the first places in the United States to witness a polo match.
