About Canton, TX
The city of Canton, Texas is located just off of Interstate 20, about sixty miles southeast of Dallas, TX. It is home to around 3,600 people and is the county seat of Van Zandt County, Texas. Being the county seat was very important to the townspeople of Canton in its early years. It was so important in fact, that the citizens of Canton took up arms and invaded the town of Wills Point, TX when the county removed the county seat from Canton and gave it to Wills Point in 1877. Cooler heads eventually prevailed and the battle was taken up in the courts. After a long and contentious fight, the dispute over which city would be the county seat was finally resolved when the Texas Supreme Court returned the county seat to Canton.
Thankfully, Canton’s tumultuous past is behind her and today, the city is most known for its “First Monday Trade Days.” Every first Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday of each month, Canton becomes a hub for shoppers and traders from all over the country. The “First Monday Trade Days” market is the oldest and largest continuously operating outdoor market in the United States. Shoppers can find just about anything and everything at the market. The market area spans 400 acres with over 7,000 vendors drawing up to 400,000 shoppers every month.
