About DeSoto, TX

DeSoto, Texas is suburb of the Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex located about 17 miles south of Dallas, Texas near the intersection of Interstate 35 and Interstate 20. The city currently covers an area of 22 square miles and is bordered by Dallas to the north, Lancaster, TX to the east, and Cedar Hill, TX to the west. According to the latest census, DeSoto was the most ethnically diverse city in the entire Metroplex. It was given an “All-America City” designation by the National Civic League in 2006 to commemorate the city’s commitment to community cooperation, tackling community-wide challenges and achieving uncommon results.

The history of DeSoto, TX can be traced back to the 1840’s, which makes DeSoto one of the oldest settlements in all of north Texas. In its early days, the city was a small farming community made up of a few hundred people. It wasn’t until 1950, that the locals decided to become a city and officially incorporate the area. After incorporation, the town continued to have little growth and as late as the 1960’s, DeSoto had a population less than 2,000. It was not until the 1970’s that the city began to experience true growth. From less than 2,000 residents in 1960, DeSoto tripled in size to 6,600 residents in 1970. By 1990, DeSoto had more than 30,000 residents. The latest count in 2010 had nearly 50,000 people residing in the city of DeSoto, TX.
