About Dumas, TX

In 1891, the task of establishing the county seat of Moore County, TX was given to a Mr. Louis Dumas. Mr. Dumas was the founder of the Moore County Townsite Company that set about establishing the town that would one day become Dumas, Texas. During these early years, Dumas experienced two natural disasters that nearly wiped the town from existence. In 1893, a grasshopper plague followed by an unusually difficult winter destroyed much of the nearby farmland and drove most of the residents out of town. At one point, the city was down to having only a single family as its official inhabitants.

Eventually, people began to come back into town and, as a result, more businesses began to pop up. This regrowth was extremely slow at first until the mid-1920s when oil was discovered in Moore County. After the discovery of oil, Dumas grew rapidly and also saw the construction of the first railroad line to pass through the town. Today, Dumas, TX is home to about 15,000 people and is still the county seat of Moore County.

For those who happen to find themselves in Dumas, TX, they should visit the Window on the Plains Museum, which contains many artifacts from the town’s early years. Next to the museum is the Art Center which displays art from many local and regional artists. The city also hosts the “Dumas Noon Lions Dogie Days,” which is produced by the Lions Club of Dumas. Now in its 68th year, this festival features a carnival, food, and game booths.
