Some more information on Eastland, Texas

Travel west along Interstate 20 for about an hour and half from Fort Worth, TX and you will come across the town of Eastland, Texas. Founded in 1891, the city was named after Captain William M. Eastland, a Texas Ranger who was decorated for bravery at the battle of San Jacinto. For the first few decades of its existence, Eastland remained a sleepy town with an economy based on farming and ranching. That all changed in the 1920’s when petroleum was discovered nearby and Eastland became one of several west Texas boomtowns.

Today, Eastland, TX has a population just under 4,000 and serves as the county seat of Eastland County, Texas. For those who happen to visit the Eastland county courthouse, be sure to read about the story of Old Rip. According to local legend, Old Rip was a horned toad that got stuck in the walls of the old Eastland county courthouse. Somehow the lizard managed to live for several years inside the walls and was eventually freed when a section of the wall was removed for repairs. To this day, the memory of Old Rip is commemorated with a sculpture on the current county courthouse.
