About Garland, TX
The city of Garland, Texas can trace its beginnings to a feud over the rights to a post office. As the story goes, the area that is now Garland was once made up of two towns, Embree and Duck Creek. In the mid 1800’s, a railroad was laid through the area and both towns experienced a boom which allowed for the construction of various buildings in and around both cities. One of the new buildings constructed was a local post office that very quickly, was claimed by both Embree and Duck Creek. This disagreement grew and grew until finally, a Dallas County Judge ordered the post office to be the moved to a spot in between both towns and the two communities to be merged into one city. This new city was then named, Garland, TX.
Since the merger of Embree and Duck Creek, Garland has experienced phenomenal growth over the years. The city is now a suburb of Dallas, TX located in northeast Dallas County. By recent estimates, Garland is the fifth most populous city in the Dallas, Fort Worth Metrpolex, the twelfth most populous city in Texas, and the eighty-seventh most populous city in the entire United States with a population just under 230,000. Furthermore, as recently as 2008, Garland was named as the sixty-seventh best place to live by CNN and Money Magazine.
