The City of Grapevine, Texas is suburb in the greater Dallas-Fort Worth Metroplex that is strategically situated south of Lake Grapevine and north of The Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport with two major highways crisscrossing the city, Highway 114 and Highway 121. First settled in the 1840’s, the name Grapevine was originally split into two words and known as Grape Vine. It wasn’t until the early part of the 20th century, in 1914, that the local post office decided to merge the words Grape and Vine to form the city’s current name of Grapevine, Texas.
For most of Grapevine’s existence, the city’s economy was agriculture based. The surrounding area was known for growing cotton and melons. Agriculture was such a big deal, that for most of the 20th century, Grapevine called itself the Cantaloupe Capital of the World. This all changed in the 1970’s with the construction of the Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport.
With the construction of the airport, Grapevine and the surrounding cities experienced a tremendous amount of economic and population growth. Grapevine itself was transformed in a few decades from a sleepy farming community to a bustling commercial center. Its population, which hovered around a few thousand residents before 1970, has grown at an increasing rate each year since. The latest estimates put Grapevine at 46,000 residents. The city of Grapevine, TX also boasts a large shopping district, some of the fanciest hotels and resorts in Dallas and Fort Worth, and a rejuvenated downtown.
