About Katy, TX

The area of land that would eventually become the city of Katy, Texas was originally known as Cane Island. Strategically located along the San Felipe Road, a trail that connected Houston to San Antonio, Cane Island was initially settled by fur trappers. In the early 1890’s, the Missouri-Kansas-Texas railroad was constructed through Cane Island. This railroad was affectionately known as “The Katy” by the locals. Shortly thereafter, a town was officially laid out in the area of Cane Island and when it came time to give this new town a name, the founders chose the name Katy in honor of the railroad’s nickname.

For most of its history, Katy existed as a small bedroom community for its larger neighbor to the east, Houston, TX. That all changed in the mid 1960’s when Interstate 10 was constructed through the city. Katy was now connected to the city of Houston and as Houston grew larger and expanded westward, Katy experienced a tremendous amount of growth that still exists to the present. By recent estimates, there are over 14,000 people living in the city of Katy and nearly 240,000 people in the greater Katy area. In 2009, the Gadberry Group, a company which provides geo-demographic data, named Katy, TX one of the top high growth areas in the entire United States.
