About Nacogdoches, TX

Nacogdoches, Texas is known as the oldest town in Texas. There has been a Spanish settlement in the area since 1716 and, according to archeological evidence, a Native American presence for the past 10,000 years. Today, there are 33,000 people that call Nacogdoches home, nearly forty percent of which are students at the local institution of higher learning, Stephen F. Austin State University.

With such a long and rich history to draw inspiration from, Nacogdoches is home to a number of attractions for history buffs. For example, there is Millard’s Crossing, a reconstructed historic village on the north side of Nacogdoches featuring a wide range of 19th century East Texas architecture such as log cabins and Victorian homes. The historic structures were established by the late Lera Millard Thomas who filled each one with a collection of antiques.

Nacogdoches also offers a variety of other activities and festivals. One such festival, the Texas Farm Bureau Freedom Fest, offers the sights, sounds, and tastes of an old-fashioned July 4th celebration. The event includes food, live music, and children’s activities. The Texas Blueberry Festival calls itself the “tastiest festival in Texas,” and features the Little Miss Blueberry Pageant, a 5K run/walk, and the much anticipated blueberry pie contest.
