About Odessa, TX
The city of Odessa, Texas was established along the tracks of the Texas and Pacific Railway as a rest stop for water and also as a shipping station for cattle. When oil was discovered on a nearby ranch in 1927, Odessa became a boom town. The city was officially incorporated, made into the county seat of Ector County, Texas and within four years, went from having a population of less than 1,000 to over 5,000 residents. By World War II, Odessa had nearly 10,000 people.
Odessa, today, is home to over 100,000 and has become a hub for culture in the Permian Basin region of western Texas. For those interested in outdoor activities, the city has plenty to offer. The Comanche Cross race is a hybrid of mountain biking and cycling, and has divisions for all ages and skill levels. Other annual community events include “Take Me Fishing,” the community Easter egg hunt, and movies in the park throughout the summer. The city also features a fully custom, 10,500-square foot skate park, as well as over 30 parks throughout the city.
History buffs will love the White-Pool House Museum. Built in 1887, it is Odessa’s longest standing structure. The Museum hosts events that look back at Texas history throughout the years. Residents can also take in a show at the Globe of the Great Southwest Theatre, which was built in the 1960's. Annual shows typically involve American and Texas history. Football fans will love the culture of high school football and can take in a game at Ratliff Stadium, the football field featured in the Odessa-based film, Friday Night Lights.
