About Pampa, TX

The city of Pampa, Texas began with a single railroad station and a single telegraph station in 1888. Originally known as Glasgow, then Sutton, the name Pampa was finally attached to the city by Mr. George Tyng, one of the city’s founding fathers. Located in the Texas Panhandle about an hour northeast of Amarillo, TX along Highway 60, Pampa has a population of 18,000 and is currently the county seat of Gray County, Texas.

The crown jewel of Pampa’s annual events is the Top ‘O Texas Rodeo held every July. Since 1945, the rodeo has drawn the most talented cowboys and cowgirls from not only Texas but also from the surrounding states throughout the Southwest.

History buffs can visit the White Deer Land Museum where the city pays tribute to its past. Pampa was also once home to famous folk musician Woody Guthrie. The Woody Guthrie Folk Music Center is located on the site of the old Harris Drug Store, where local folklore says, Mr. Guthrie learned to play the guitar. The drug store site now pays homage to his career. Finally, there is the Devil’s Rope Museum that showcases the history of barbed wire.
