About Pittsburg, TX

Pittsburg, Texas is a small town in northeast Texas located about 120 miles east of Dallas, TX. The city has a population of almost 4,500 and currently serves as the county seat of Camp County, TX. Pittsburg was founded in 1854 by William Harrison Pitts, from whom it derives its name, and covers an area of three square miles.

For a city of such small size, Pittsburg has been home to more than its share of “big” things. For example, Pittsburg was the home of the first Carnegie Library in the State of Texas. It is also the birthplace of two large companies, the Pilgrim’s Pride Corporation and Cavender’s Boot City. Carroll Shelby, a renowned automobile designer and race car driver, called Pittsburg home until his death in 2012. Shelby is most known for winning the 24 Hours of Le Mans race in 1959 and for his work in developing cars for Ford Motors and Dodge.

In 2013, Pittsburg established an Art and Wine festival that showcases wines from local wineries. The annual Pioneer Days festival held in downtown Pittsburg attracts patrons from all over the region. The festival has a parade, carnival, and an arts and crafts show. The Texas Parks and Wildfire department and the city of Pittsburg sponsor Kid’s Fishing Day, an annual day of fishing for children at Pittsburg’s city park pond. The Northeast Texas Rural Heritage Museum includes both the Pittsburg Depot Museum and the Farmstead Museum. The Pittsburg Depot has an archeology exhibit about the native Caddo Indians as well as a working printing press and telegraph station. The Farmstead Museum features a 100 year old farmhouse that has been restored with a barn, smokehouse, and a blacksmith shop.
