In 1876, Mr. T. K. Seago constructed and opened a general store in what is now modern day Seagoville, TX. Over the next several years, additional structures were built around the general store and a small town began to appear with the general store as its centerpiece. In honor of Mr. Seago’s store, this new town became known as Seago, TX. After the turn of the century, there were two cities in Texas that shared similar sounding names - Seago, TX and Sego, TX, which caused great confusion with mail delivery. In 1910, in order to end the confusion once and for all, the US Post Office decided to rename Seago, TX into Seagoville, the name that still stands to this very day.
Seagoville, Texas is a suburb of the Dallas, Fort Worth Metroplex with a population of nearly 15,000 people. It is located along US Highway 175 about 20 miles southeast of Dallas. Seagoville’s most significant contribution to the history of the United States occurred during World War Two when the town was the site of a federal detention center for Americans of Japanese heritage. The detention center is now the Federal Correctional Institution, Seagoville, a minimum security federal prison.
