Founded in 1881 and once nicknamed New Chicago, the city of Deming, New Mexico was once projected to become as big as the city in its nickname. Deming was, after all, the site where the Silver Spike connected two major transcontinental railroads. Because of this event, many thought that Deming would one day become a major railroad hub. Quite possibly Deming’s most offbeat annual event is the Great American Duck Race. This is an event that features live duck racing. Music, a bevy of food vendors, a balloon rally and a parade are also part of the Duck Race’s family-friendly mix.
