Gallup, New Mexico, is located near the Four Corners region of the U.S – where New Mexico, Arizona, Utah, and Colorado intersect. The town was in founded in 1881 and named after David Gallup, who was a paymaster for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad. The latest numbers from Gallup put its population at 21,678, which makes it the most populous city between Flagstaff, Arizona, and Albuquerque, New Mexico. The city is locally known as the “Heart of Indian Country” as many Native American tribes call this area home. In 2013, Rand McNally’s Best of the Road contest named Gallup as America’s most patriotic small town.
Gallup was also the setting for many Western films shot during the 1940s and 1950s as the city was heralded for its rugged terrain. Some of the movies filmed in Gallup include, Billy the Kid, Ace in the Hole, Escape from Fort Bravo, and The Hallelujah Trail. In 2006, it was the central setting for the Sci-Fi Channel’s mini-series The Lost Room, and in 2005 entertainer Akon recorded a music video in Gallup.
The Rex Museum, located right along historic Highway 66, puts Gallup’s rich heritage on display. An interesting fact about the Rex Museum is that it used to be brothel, but is now home to a plethora of local artifacts, including an inventory of graves in the local cemetery, photos of old Gallup, and many other historic items. The Red Rock Museum chronicles the lives of many of the Native American tribes that lived in the Gallup area, dating back to the 300 B.C. There is something for everyone in Gallup, with plays, rodeos and more.
