A man by the name of Titus Bronson was the first permanent white settler in the area and he is credited with establishing the town that would one day become Kalamazoo. Kalamazoo is known for its arts scene. All Ears Theatre offers 12 free performances such as comedies and dramas each season. The biennial Irving S. Gilmore International Keyboard Festival is internationally recognized as the most prestigious piano music festival in the United States. The festival features 100 events that highlights accomplished pianists and keyboard musicians from around the world. The Kalamazoo Institute for Arts has collections that highlight such things as American paintings, European and American prints, photographs, and even pre-Columbian gold.
Kalamazoo also has a variety of attractions and events that are budget-friendly or free. Art Hop is a free event where local art galleries and businesses in Kalamazoo all open their doors at the same time on the first Friday of each month. Sunday Concerts in the Park features local musical groups that perform free concerts on Sunday afternoons in Bronson Park. The Kalamazoo Valley Museum has interactive history, science and technology exhibits. The museum also displays a 2,300 year-old mummy and has a planetarium. General admission to the museum is free.
