The first settlers that came to the area that would eventually become Lansing, Michigan were tricked into coming to Michigan by a land scheme. These settlers, mostly from the state of New York, thought they had purchased land in an already established town in central Michigan. When they arrived to the area, they quickly realized the nature of the scam. Instead of returning home, many of the settlers decided to stay and quickly built their own settlement that they named Lansing Township. In 1847, the Michigan legislature decided that the state needed a new capital city somewhere in the center of the state. After much debate, Lansing Township was selected as the site of the new capital. Officials then decided to remove the word “township” to form the city’s current name of Lansing.
Lansing, Michigan commonly referred to as L-Town, is now the fifth largest city in Michigan with just over 114,000 residents. If you include the greater metropolitan area, the population grows to more than half a million people. The city has become one of Michigan’s centers of government, culture, and education. Lansing is not only the location of the state’s highest government institutions, but is also home to Michigan State University, two of the state’s medical schools, the Michigan Historic Center, and two law schools, and some of the country’s largest insurance companies.
