The first people to live at the site that would become the city of Saginaw, Michigan were the Sauk people. The term “Saginaw” itself is believed to mean “where the Sauk were” in the language of the Ojibwe tribe who drove out the Sauk people from their lands. The first permanent European settlement was established in 1815 when Louis Campau built a trading post on the west bank of the Saginaw River. In 1819, the United States Army established a fort near the trading post and named it Fort Saginaw. Fort Saginaw became Saginaw, MI which was incorporated as a city in 1857.
